Some of the classic cocktails that are not widely known today, are not known because of a reason. This cocktail probably invented in the 1920s or 1930s combines bourbon, grapefruit juice and honey. For me this is not a good cocktail, if you like grapefruit or bourbon then it might be something for you, but I did not enjoy this one. What I think is the important thing to tell with this cocktail is that sometimes, two similar cocktails, like this and the Gold Rush, with minor differences may suit your preferences completely differently. To begin with, I am not a big fan of bourbon, that being said, I do like some bourbon cocktails. However, it is a fine line with the whiskey being overpowering and providing the right base for the cocktail. For me, while the honey takes a big role in this cocktail, I would want the citrus to take a bigger role. In the end, for me the big lesson from this experience is that I will not make another one of these for myself nor will I ever order one.

In the end, if you are interested in cocktails it is good to have these kinds of experiences sometimes. To understand what you like is as important as to understand what you don’t like. You can only grow your palette and knowledge by testing new flavours. This is also a lesson to what I always preach, that you start with one cocktail and changing an ingredient, or the ratios will make you learn more about you as a cocktail consumer and your skills. Sometimes these adaptions don’t work out, sometimes they do. Sometimes you need to play around with the ratios, but if you find that you don’t like the general idea, then the cocktail is probably not for you, there are many good cocktails out there and trying to change one until you like it is probably not worth your time. To conclude, I don’t like this cocktail, but that doesn’t mean that someone might like the cocktail.

My Recipe:

  • 2 oz (6 cl) Bourbon
  • 1 oz (3 cl) Grapefruit Juice
  • 0.75 (2.25 cl) Honey Syrup

Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice, shake and strain into a chilled coupe class. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
