Based on a cocktail that sailors used to drink, this is a variation of the cocktail. Generally, when it comes to this cocktail there are many different variations and I will not go into them, the internet will probably give you enough answers to the question. One thing I want to discuss here is when different ratios make the cocktails different. The version I have made is quite similar to the daiquiri, which I have covered before.

One of the important points to discuss here is if you have three ingredients and up the ratio of one compared to the others at what point does it make a different cocktail, or is it a different cocktail if the ratio is changed? If it would have been a different cocktail then there would be no variation, adaptions or interpretations. This is made more difficult when it is hard to track the recipes as well as changes for differences in the ingredients. However, this cocktail makes it strikingly clear that if you change the ratios enough the cocktail would be completely different. This cocktail is more like drinking rum with some accents of lime and sugar, whereas the daiquiri is a mix of lime, sugar and rum. For me, if you use a nice rum you really like then I would highly recommend this cocktail if you have a mediocre rum that generally works well in cocktails you are probably better off making a daiquiri.

My Recipe:

  • 2 oz (6 cl) Rum
  • 0.5 oz (1.5 cl) Lime Juice
  • 0.5 oz (1.5 cl) Demerara Syrup

Add the ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake to chill and dilute. Strain into a double old fashioned glass with ice and garnish with a lime wheel.
